What an ITIN is, and what it is not

An ITIN is a tax processing number for people who need a US taxpayer number but can't get a Social Security number. It goes on a US tax return.

It does not provide immigration status, work authorization or Social Security benefits.

Most non-resident owners of a single-member LLC don't need one: the company's EIN covers banking and Form 5472.
